The Bouleuterion

From Connolly and Dodge, The Ancient City

The original Bouleuterion1 or meeting place for the Council of 500 (2) was located next to the Tholos (4), but was replaced by a new Bouleuterion (3) at the end of the fifth century.2  This new building contained a theater-like seating arrangement for the Council.

Note

1. Bouleuterion means 'place for planning'.
2.  At which time the old Bouleuterion was converted into a sanctuary for the Mother goddess (Mêtrôon), which was also used to house an archive for public records.
