- Locate Perky Duck in your START menu (it may be listed under Duxbury) and launch the application. The program will open to a blank screen.
- Locate the FILE menu and select NEW.
- The first time you use Perky Duck you will need to set up a Generic Embosser even though you will not emboss any files. This step is only done one time.
- Go to the "GLOBAL" menu and select "Embosser Set-Up."
- Select OK to dismiss the warning message
- Select NEW
- Under EMBOSSER MODEL select Generic, then select OK
- Use the drop-down menu to select paper form: wide width 11 inch long braille paper and note the following settings:
- Characters per line: 40
- Lines per page: 25
- Top margin: 0
- Binding margin: 0
- Emboss Banner Page: unchecked
- You are now ready to braille.
- Begin by saving your new file. Name your file as described in the assignment instructions. It is suggested that you create a folder on your computer hard drive for all transcription assignments. Save your work frequently - do not wait until you are finished brailling to save!.
- Place your fingers on the six keys: S D F J K L. These six keys represent the six braille dots of the cell as follows:
- dot 1 = F dot 4 = J
- dot 2 = D dot 5 = K
- dot 3 = S dot 6 = L
- To produce most letters of the alphabet you will press multiple keys simultaneously. For example, the letter y is produced with dots 1-3-4-5-6. This means you will press the keys FSJKL all together to produce the braille cell that represents the letter y.
