A Sample Student Project Involving Wildlife Rehabilitation
Subject Area: Conservation Biology,
Wildlife Ecology
Grade Level: 9-12
Purpose(s) of Lesson: students will learn about a specific endangered animal and
teach the rest of the class about their animal
Students will work in groups and:
1. give a history and the current population status of an endangered
species in the United States of their choice;
2. describe the various management techniques of rehabilitators of managing
their endangered species in the United States;
3. Give an overview of the ecological impact and management practices of
their endangered animal;
4. gather information from the Internet;
5. construct a plan for teaching about the importance of saving their
endangered animal; and
6. explain the ecological impact of their endangered species..
Procedure:
1. Students work in small groups gathering information on an endangered species that they chose from encyclopedias, the Internet, interviews with wildlife rehabilitators, interviews with policy makers from organizations like HSUS, NWRA, etc.
2. Students synthesize the
information into an oral report they give to the class.
