Xiaohui LiangAssociate Professor, IEEE Senior Member [CV] |
Xiaohui Liang is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair with the Department of Computer Science at University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMB) where he leads the Mobile Computing and Privacy (MobCP) Lab. His research interests are Mobile Healthcare, Internet of Things, Wearable Computing, and Security and Privacy for Communication and Networking Systems. He has published over 100 refereed journal and conference papers. He received the Early Career Research Excellence Award from UMass Boston College of Science and Mathematics in 2020, the Early Career Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing from IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing in 2017, the Best Land Transportation Paper Award from IEEE Vehicular Technology Society in 2017, the Internet of Things Technology Research Award from Google in 2016, the Best Paper Award in BodyNets 2010. His Google Scholar H-Index is 54 and total citation is 13,018 as of Sep. 2024. He is the Single PI of an NIH R01 Project 2019-2023 and the Lead PI of an NSF Project 2016-2020. Prior to joining UMB in Fall 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher (with Professor David Kotz, FIEEE) at Dartmouth College in 2014-2015, and worked on an NSF frontier project THaW. He received the PhD degree (awarded Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies) in Electrical and Computer Engineering (under the supervision of Professor Sherman Shen, FIEEE and Professor Xiaodong Lin, FIEEE), University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2013. He received the BSc (ACM class, with the University Excellent Undergraduate Thesis Award) and MSc degree (with the Shanghai Excellent Master Thesis Award) in Computer Science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2006 and 2009, respectively.

- May 9, 2022 - Our paper "Voice-assisted Food Recall using Voice Assistants" has been accepted by the International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in June 2022! We have built the first prototype of voice-assisted food recall, evaluated the prototype on 20 young adults and 20 older adults, and receievd promising feasibility and acceptance of our initial prototype.
- April 20, 2022 - CogVox research update: We have successfully recruited 34 older adults for Phase II evaluation: 20 (10 healthy and 10 with mild cognitive impairment) will perform seven in-lab sessions in 18 months, and 14 (5 healthy and 9 with mild cognitive impairment) will perform both seven in-lab sessions and continuous home data evaluation (Example of home data tracking).
- April 16, 2022 - Jing will present "Improving the Usability of Dietary Recall using Voice Assistants" in the Student Design Competition at International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction in June 2022, and CSM Fellowship Showcase at UMB in May 2022. The newly-collected data includes 1685 Alexa commands over 40 older adults (age > 65).
