SIMPLE WEB PAGE CREATION

Web pages may be created using specialized web authoring software or as web output from office software, such as, word processing programs, spreadsheets, databases, or presentation programs. For the Applied Technology competency, we will use Microsoft Word to author pages that are saved in web format. The use of a word processing program is convenient, but it doesn’t include many of the bells and whistles you might get in a web authoring program. It may also add in web commands (HTML commands) that are unique to the program and not a part of web standards. This can sometimes create situations where the page will look different on different browsers. You should check that the result seen through a browser looks acceptable.
To create a web page with word processing programs, you need to treat each web page as a separate document. Each page is designed in a word processing file and then the “SAVE AS” option is used to save that page in web format. When a file is saved in web format, it has an “htm” or “html” filename.
To create a home page, open the word processing program and add what elements you want on the home page. It is usual to add a Title, some descriptive information, and the name of the person responsible for the page, and contact information. The title of the page should be a short description of what the page is about. The descriptive information may include hyperlinks to other web pages. This assignment requires having a hyperlink (URL) on your web page. The hyperlink is added by typing a descriptive phrase for the link, highlighting the phrase, and then selecting “Insert Hyperlink” from the programs menu. When the hyperlink insert window is displayed, type in the name of the file containing the web page to which you wish the browser to go. For example if you named your home page “myhomepage.htm” and another page “myphotos.htm”, then on the home page you would type a descriptive phrase, such as “photos of me” . Then, you would highlight this phrase, select “Insert Hyperlink”, and type the name of the web page, myphotos.htm. In the separate myphotos file you would insert those photos you wished the viewer to see.
Contact information should include email and address.
