INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPSS

 

CREATING A NEW FILE

1. Click on the SPSS icon.

2. If menu is displayed, click on “new file”.

3. If menu is not displayed, double click on “VAR0001” name.

This will call up a variable definition menu. Define new variable name, variable label, value label, variable type, and missing value.

4. Click on “Okay”. This will end variable definition for the first variable. Repeat process 1 through 4 for all variables.

5. Proceed to enter data in blank squares, as in a spreadsheet, one person per line.

6. Save the file using a meaningful file name.

 

ACCESSING AN EXISTING FILE

1. Click on the SPSS icon.

2. Click on the “File” menu bar.

3. Click on the “Open” menu item.

4. Type in the file name to be opened. Be sure that the disk name is correct (usually “A:”.

5.      Click on “Okay”. This will load in the file and display it on the computer screen. Either use variable transformations to create or manipulated data or begin to analyze data.

 

ANALYZING DATA

1. Open up or create a file containing the data to be analyzed (see above).

2. Click on the “Statistics” menu bar.

3. Point to the type of statistical analysis you wish to use.

4. Click on the menu item for the type of analysis you are doing. This will open up a menu of options in which you select the variables to be analyzed and define options in the analysis.

5. Select the variables and options according to the choices presented.

6. Click on “Okay”. The analysis will proceed. It will be displayed on the screen.

7. If error messages are displayed, not the errors, go back to the “Statistics” menu, select the statistics menu item, and correct the errors on the screen.

8. If errors are not displayed and results are displayed, save them to a file with a meaningful file name or print them out.

9. If you have created or changed variables, be sure to save your data file.

10. Click on “File” and click on “exit.”
