Course Description:

This course considers issues in alcohol misuse, licit and illicit drug use, and the criminal justice system.  An emphasis on social science research methodology will frame each sub-topic with current and classic, state-of-the art research studies providing evidence associating alcohol misuse, drug abuse, and criminality.  Policy questions and approaches are considered.

 

Course Objectives:

(1)   To highlight the association between alcohol, drug use, and crime in America.

(2)   To locate alcohol, drugs, and crime in historical, sociocultural, and synergistic context.

(3)   To distinguish legal and policy issues as related to substance use and crime

(4)   To examine the etiology and epidemiology of substance use and criminality from competing paradigms or theories.

(5)   To compare and contrast criminal justice and public health models in prevention, treatment, and societal wellness. 

(6)   To consider social service trends and their effects on the definition of health and illness, crime and criminals.

Expectations & Grading: There will be a midterm and peer reviewed presentation in this class, each worth 30% of  your grade (60%).  There is one term paper assignment due May 10, 2004 in which you will complete a fieldwork project and theoretically analyze and present your experience via social science research format.  This term paper will comprise 30% of your grade.  Attendance and class participation is worth 10%.   All students are also expected to present briefly on related current events throughout the semester.
