13. Heterogeneity
Preamble: This activity takes us to the farthest reaches of my explorations of ways that "changes in work, technology, commerce, and social life [are changing] our needs and capacities for mathematical thinking." You might not get drawn into my explorations of heterogeneity, but it is mean to stand as a model of each of us identifying our own farthest reaching explorations building on this course.
Preparation
Read Taylor, P (2014) "Troubled by Heterogeneity?: A simple example to illustrate why we might or might not be,"
http://wp.me/pPWGi-zU (viewed 7 Sep 17)
Goals
- To gain a sense that there are many different kinds of heterogeneity, that each has implications for the way we base our actions in society, and that somewhere on or over the horizon is mathematical thinking that addresses various kinds of heterogeneity.
- To sketch out your own farthest reaching explorations building on this course.
Activity
- Lecture (visual aids) (30 mins)
- Freewrite, pair, share on your own farthest reaching explorations building on this course (7+10+23 = 40 mins)
- Plus-delta feedback on activity (5 mins)
Post-class reading (optional)
