This painting was transferred to the Uffizi in 1666 from
ownership of Cardinal Carlo de' Medici. Art historians
theorize that the sitter in the portrait was either linked
to the Medici (the medal, coined in 1464, shows the profile
of Cosimo the Elder Pater Patriae with the
inscription MAGNUS COSMUS MEDICES PPP) or he was Antonio
Filipepi, the goldsmith and medallist brother to
Botticelli.
